Youth Leader After High School

My name is Roline Joeneme, as a recent graduate out of high school, I still play the role as a youthleader at the Edward C. Gartland Youth centre. I find it a pleasure to still come to the centre and be a role model as a leader for youngsters.

I feel good that I can still be a part of the youth centre and not feel like a stranger or feel old around them.

It has been three months since I have been out of high school and I can say that the youth centre has been no strange place to me. I still participate in various activities that are happening here at the centre.

I hope in the future there is always something I can volunteer to do to give my time to the youths.

Psychotic 5

Five {5} girls and five stories, all starting with one passion. A passion to dance.

They met at the Edward C Gartland Youth Centre during summer 2008 and from then on became the best of friends.

Obviously from the name there are five of them: Roline (aka roro), Jeannia (aka J), Guerta (aka G Baby), Kin-z (aka Lady Ice) and Wisland (aka Barbie Doll). Guerta and Wisland met Kin-z when they were chosen to be Leaders at the Youth Centre, Roline and Jeannia knew each other because they attended the same church but only now they started talking.

During the summer while being ok friends but not yet cool, David Bowen started teaching a dance class at the Youth Centre and coincidentally all of us were interested. At breaks we would talk and we hung out with each and time passed by and we were much more comfortable and we even performed at Brighton Hall as the New Breed group. From then on we looked out for each other, talked, played, went out together and so on.

One thing about us is that any time we hear music we dance no matter what kind of music it is. Our name PSYCHOTIC 5 was formed by all of us and it fits because of our craziness. Leaving Psychotic 5 in a room alone or with few people is second (2nd) degree murder and someone messing with us third (3rd) degree; like I said we always watching out for each other.

Youth Leader: Dayanna Guerrier

My name is Dayanna Guerrier , I'm 14 years old and this is my brief statement about the Edward C. Gartland Youth Centre. This facility was officially opened on November 7th 2008.  It is a place where many activities are carried on daily such as: drama camp, native dancing, limbo contest (boys vs girls!), computer and typing class, english class and so much more!

At the time when the Youth Centre was not yet constructed my life was missing something. As soon as I was introduced to the Centre, it became a big part of my life.  Though sometimes it's fun, we still have to uphold the rules of the Centre.  

I currently hold a position as a Youth Leader and I'm also Treasurer for the Youth In Development group.  In Youth In Development, we work together to enhance the minds of the youth for the future, by attending meetings and workshops, organizing fundraisers and doing community projects.

Why the Youth Centre is so Important to Me

My name is Edwardo Robinson, I am 15 years old, I live in five cays. I am a Youth Leader at the Youth Centre. A youth leader is a person that leads someone in the right path. Being a youth centre leader has made me a better person in life; I have learned so much. As a youth leader it takes a lot of responsibility and you have to have Respect.

I love the Youth Centre so much if they don’t have it I don’t know what I’ll do. It is the best place ever, it has a lot of things to do. Sport like basketball, football, dodge ball, soccer, etc. Board games like Checkers, puzzles, Where’s Waldo, Boggle, Connect Four, Monopoly etc. the youth centre is very Educational .

My good friends are Kin-z , Guerta, Wisland, Jeania, Antoine, Rubino, Rocky, and Jermima. We are in a dance group and we have fun doing it, Our dance teacher is David Bowen. I am the Vice President of the Youth in Development group.

Keeping the Culture

On Monday july21 a lady from South Caicos came to the youth centre and showed us how to make baskets out of palm tree leaves. She said before you can start to plat the basket, you have to let the palm trees preserve for many weeks. When she began platting the leaves I thought it was easy, but when we began doing it, it was hard! Although we began getting use to it. It was like the more you did it the more you enjoyed it because it is a lot of fun. On Mondays and Thursdays she comes here to interact with us and on those days we go bit by bit in doing the basket. Doing this helps us to get to know one another and spend quality time.

My name is Jermima, I am 12 years old and I have been coming to the youth centre for two months and I'm already enjoying myself. I come to the youth centre to play games and make new friends.

To me the youth centre is a very awsome place where you and your friends can just chill out and have fun. When you come here students and adults help you to socialize with one another. When you come here you can get help in the subject you are having difficulties in such as maths, reading, social studies and many more you name it. I have played so many games that I never get tired of such as: basketball, soccer, pool, board games and so many more that i cant tell.

When I first came here i did not no anyone, but the more I came here is the more I socialized with different people. I felt for the first time that the Youth Centre can make your life a better place. I also think you should come here because here we have the most friendly set of people. I could tell you if I enjoyed it here i think you will too...

Youth Leader: Roline

My name is Roline Joeneme, I am 18 years old and I am a youth leader at the Edward C. Gartland Youth Centre.

As a youth leader, I play role of a receptionist at the front desk. As leader I'm a Disciplinary Coordinator. I see the Youth Centre as a place for me to me new people. The Centre is a place where I get a chance to be a role model to the younger people. Being a youth leader I get a chance to be a game leader also, coming up with new games to play with the children and getting them involved in the games.

I have been a youth leader at the Edward C. Gartland Youth Centre for a year. I do not just act as a leader here but I also participate in activities that are happening at the Centre such as board games, dance class, poetry, hula hoop competition and more.

I also play the position of supervising some of these games. The Youth Centre is a place to be and I think all young people should take the part in becoming a member.
